The factory HE351VE Variable Geometry Turbos (VGT) that started life out on the first models of the 6.7L Cummins were designed to alleviate the constant battle of under or oversized turbos having too narrow of a power band. In the past, with standard turbos, they would either have lackluster bottom end response, or lose efficiency in the upper boost levels. With the variable geometry design, you could now get the best of both worlds, as the turbo could literally internally expand and contract.
